Migrated My Astro Blog Theme from Yukina to Mizuki

This is an English translation of the original Japanese article, translated with the help of AI.

This blog, “ilapaj Library,” had been using Astro’s Yukina theme since March 8 of this year.

However, after repeatedly making messy modifications, its behavior became completely baffling, so I was thinking about rebuilding it from scratch.

Especially during page transitions: it was supposed to provide seamless transitions via Swup, but stopped doing so, and the article search feature broke completely. I tried fixing it by relying on AI, but had no luck.

The Premise#

I really like the IndieWeb trend. It’s all about returning to the vibe of personal websites back in the GeoCities era.

On the other hand, I don’t really want to mess around with pure HTML and CSS. In particular, I want to keep my document data stored as Markdown.

Which means:

  • Without having my writing owned by big tech corporations
  • Being able to flexibly customize how it looks
  • Being able to keep articles saved in Markdown in preparation for future migrations

Running on Astro, which strikes this happy medium, was non-negotiable.

And while ideally I would have liked to implement everything myself without relying on someone else’s theme, I don’t have that much frontend knowledge.

While consulting Gemini (the AI) and trying various things, I wasn’t able to create anything where I felt, “This is better than Yukina!”

The prototype. Not bad, but I ended up thinking, “If it’s just this, I might as well stick with Yukina.”

The Fuwari Family#

Yukina was a truly wonderful theme. What made me decide to use Astro out of all the SSGs was falling in love with this theme at first sight.

Yukina is a Fuwari-based theme, but I discovered Mizuki as another publicly available theme based on Fuwari.

Not only is it packed with features, but each feature is designed so that it can be easily toggled from the config, which I loved. On top of that, from a quick glance, the code is truly beautiful. Modifying it also looks very easy.

So, I decided to migrate to the Mizuki theme.

Since both are based on Fuwari, migrating the articles themselves was pretty much completed just by copying and pasting the Markdown files. After that, I asked gemini-cli to help carry over some of the customizations from the Yukina era.

In keeping with the open-source spirit, I’d like to release the modified theme as well. I’ll leave that as future work.
